Sweet Mama has been redesigned to be more simple to use, smaller, and even more mellow than last year (if that was possible, but we did it).  Now a 2 piece call, Sweet Pocket Mama is a 2 1/2 inch, cherry wood call that is so simple to use.  I added a rubber note marker to make finding your sweet spot note easy and simple.  You simply press your lips on the marker, sealing off the air flow outside the call, and blow into the mouthpiece making that "eeeeeeeewwwwww" or "eeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuu" sound.  No needing to move your lips up and down the mouthpiece, just blow softly.  The marker is set to make the calf sound that we know is making the bulls move toward and come in more than bugles do.

I am excited about his new format for the Sweet Mama elk call.  It takes less work to use, fits into your pocket, and  for 2010, based on feedback, I have added a lanyard ring to the call so not only can you put it in your pocket, but now you can add a cord and tie it around your neck as well.

Not many of us, probably less than 10%, elk hunters can talk about having some of the best guides and outfitters standing 60-100 yards behind us making cow calls from the variety of plastic, or blended, cow calls on the market today.  These sharp, shrill calls work great when the elk are a long way from us, but if you are calling by yourself like I do, then you need a soft, subtle herd cow call made for the close in work when you call for yourself!

For years I have used numerous cow elk calls made from a number of different materials, or a mix of materials.  None of these calls gave me the rich, sweet, soft sound that you actually hear when you listen to the heard as the cows and calves talk among themselves, espically when the herd, or even singles, are less than 100 yards from you!

In order to make a more realistic sounding call than what I could find on the maket, I asked a friend of mine, who is a professional muscian, to help me find a way to reproduce those soft higher pitch, but rich, cow and calf mews and sounds.

I tried numerous woods, and blends of woods (maple, walnut, black walnut, cherry, bloodwood) searching for just the right blend of woods to reproduce the mouthpiece like you find on a muscial instrument.

Other calls seem to have a tinny, or harsh sound to them, they were just not gutsy enough for what I wanted, so using these woods I worked on pitch, angles, length of mouthpiece and sound chamber, thickness of the reed (I even tried a clairnet and oboe reed - too hard to keep moist) .

"Sweet Pocket Mama" is about 2 1/2 inches long, 4 inches long when inside the sound chamber, and 1 inch around and made of cherry.   However, after reading the feedback from call users, they seem to like using the call reed up or down.  This allows the sensitive lower lip to control the pitch and pressure on the call.  Simply place your lower lip in the middle of the reed pressing down lightly on the mouthpiece note marker with your lower lip.  Lightly blow into the call and let the wood and reed do the work.

There is no doubt that the wood, the angle of the mouthpiece and the structure of the sound chamber makes the soft, but rich sound I was looking for.  The new note marker, and the design of the call make the two pitches i was looking for, you will love this newly designed call.
